Islam Does Not Have To Spread With a Bang

Islam has two ways of spreading across the globe. One way is confrontational and murderous and demands our immediate attention. The other way is much more stealthy and, if played properly, is barely noticed at all.

As our skyscrapers fell in New York, the creeping influence of Muslims in Europe was already decades old. Liberal immigration laws and exploding birth rates among many immigrant communities heaped the newcomers with powers and consequences undreamed of by the countries affected. Now, in the Netherlands, in 2006, what was unnoticed for many years is starting to capture some attention.

From The Brussels Journal via The Religion of Peace.

Today the center-left newspaper De Volkskrant writes that the immigrant vote has tipped the balance in favour of the Left. This should not come as a surprise. All across Europe, immigrants tend to vote for the Left. The Left is perceived to be the welfare state’s Santa Claus. Most of the immigrants who came to Europe during the past decades were attracted by the generous welfare benefits which Western Europe lavishly bestows on the “underprivileged.” Today, owing to their demographic growth, the immigrant vote is increasing as more and more young immigrants reach voting age. In many countries the Left has begun to cater for the immigrants, aware that the immigrants guarantee their power.

According to the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies of the University of Amsterdam 80% of the non-indigenous electorate voted for Labour. This explains why cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Breda and Arnhem succumbed to the Left. 84% of the Turks voted for the PvdA; 81% of the Antillians/Surinamese did likewise. Of the Moroccans 78% voted Labour and 12% voted Green Left.
While this sort of slow change in voter demographics doesn't carry with it all the immediate fear and resistance that jihad does, the resultant society can be one and the same. Europeans will soon have to decide whether they prefer dhimmitude or a new place to live.

Lunchtime Confrontation

Two similar movies came to mind yesterday as I began eating lunch in Oscoda at the AuSable Inn.

I was sitting there about to enjoy my appetizer when I thought of “Aliens” and “Starship Troopers,” two movies not known for the kindling of hunger or the settling of consumed food.

But, crayfish were on the plate, and the little guys kept staring up at me with their beady eyes and holding their menacing pincers like I was the one on the menu. Armed with superior firepower and with my appetite to protect, I wasn’t about to let cambaridae cambarus get the best of me.

You know that there are times when diplomacy is not the answer.

Pending Bill In California Would Attack Traditional Family Structure in Schools

One of the biggest fears we parents have when we send our children off to public school is that the government can usurp parental desires in shaping the children's attitudes toward religion, morality, ethics, and politics.

Unfortunately for many (myself included) homeschooling and private schooling are not an option for me. I'm lucky in that my children attent a small public school where I know the teachers and the administration. I know the bus drivers, the janitors and the aides too. While the kids many times think this is a disadvantage, I sort of like it.)

So, from this rather safe hamlet I cannot help to be concerned about the way things are changing around us. We have three important national news items this past week or so where teachers have taken it upon themselves to persuade their students toward leftist ideology with liberal politicizing, a job that should be reserved for parents and not for the government's union member employees. The three recent news stories are here, here and here.

So, how surprised can we be to find out that California is pushing the envelope even farther into an area that clearly infringes on parents' needs to instruct their children on moral and ethical basics. From WorldNetDaily.

A traditional-values organization in California is warning the state's residents that a bill pending in the Legislature, if approved, could remove all references to gender in public schools – threatening even references to "mom" or "dad" in textbooks.

If the bill, SB 1437, were to become law, warns the Capitol Resource Institute, "it could potentially require gender-neutral bathrooms in our schools and all references to 'husband' and 'wife' or 'mom and dad' removed from school textbooks as the norm."

Sponsored by Democratic Sen. Sheila Kuehl – a lesbian actress best known for playing Zelda in "The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis" in the '60s – the legislation would add "gender" (actual or perceived) and "sexual orientation" to the law that prohibits California public schools from having textbooks, teaching materials, instruction or "school-sponsored activities" that reflect adversely upon people based on characteristics like race, creed and handicap.
This is an attempt by people in our government to take an even larger parental role in the raising of our children.

Kind of scary, huh?

Protest Yale

Please take a minute to read this article by Clinton W. Taylor concerning Yale's admission of a former high ranking Taliban offical (despite his 4th grade education and his attachement to an organization that treated gays and women a little more harshly than the "don't ask, don't tell" military.)

In Townhall.

Since the New York Times and Wall Street Journal broke the news about the admission of Taliban official Sayeed Rahmatullah Hashemi to a special student program at Yale, we’ve received numerous emails from outraged Yale Alumni. One email stood out from the rest — "I won’t give Yale one red cent this year, but maybe I will give them a red fingernail instead!"

She was referring to the Taliban’s policy of pulling the fingernails off of Afghani women who dared to wear fingernail polish. Some of these women even had their thumbs sliced off as punishment. To date, Mr. Rahmatullah has not apologized or taken responsibility for his support of this brutal regime, though he told the Times he wished he’d been "a little bit softer" in his advocacy.

If you’d like to show your outrage at Yale’s decision to admit the Taliban’s spokeman, join us in "giving Yale the finger." It would be disgusting– not to mention really painful — to mail your own fingernails, but you can buy glamorous, decadent, shameless-hussy-scarlet press-on nails (ask for "nail tips") from any drug store or beauty shop. They’re cheap; a box costs about $5.00. (Caution to Harvard-educated readers: do not eat the press-on nails. Sure, they look tasty, but they will make you sick.)
This is a wonderful idea. Take the time to forward the article on.

Many Iraqi Tribes Unite Against al-Qaeda

It has finally come to a point when many of the tribes in Iraq have decided that enough is enough. They are tired of the murder and the meyhem and would like life to get back to normal. From the Washington Post.

First they killed the chief of the Naim tribe and his son. Then they killed a top tribal sheik who headed the Fallujah city council. Then they assassinated the leader of the al-Jubur tribe.

And now the reported killers of all these men -- al-Qaeda in Iraq, the insurgent group of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi -- have a powerful new enemy.

Tribal chiefs in Iraq's western Anbar province and in an area near the northern city of Kirkuk, two regions teeming with insurgents, are vowing to strike back at al-Qaeda in Iraq, a Sunni Arab-led group that is waging war against Sunni tribal leaders who are cooperating with the Iraqi government and the U.S. military. Anbar tribes have formed a militia that has killed 20 insurgents from al-Qaeda in Iraq, leaders said.

Separately, more than 300 tribal chiefs, politicians, clerics, security officials and other community leaders met last week in Hawijah, about 35 miles southwest of Kirkuk, and "declared war" on al-Qaeda in Iraq. In a communique, the participants vowed "the shedding of blood" of anyone involved in "sabotage, killings, kidnappings, targeting police and army, attacking the oil and gas pipelines and their transporters, assassinating the religious and tribal figures, technicians, and doctors."

"Hawijah was never a hideout for terrorists and fugitives," the statement added. "Anyone who provides refuge to terrorists will be considered and dealt with like a criminal and terrorist."
While I am not necissarily in favor of roving bands of militia fighting for tribal causes, I think that these groups joining together for the security of Iraq is a good thing. I hope that disbanding the militia after the terrorists are quashed is an easy thing to do.

New Video of Kidnapped CPT Activists in Iraq

From the Christian Peacemaker Team's website:

Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) is aware that a new videotape showing members of our organization abducted in Iraq on November 26, 2005 has aired today on Al-Jazeera television. We continue to pray for their safe and speedy release so that they may return to their families and carry on their peaceful work on behalf of all Iraqi detainees.

This past weekend marked the 100th day since our friends disappeared in Baghdad. In vigils around the world, people came together to honor our missing colleagues and to call for their safe release. We also hold in our hearts the families of 14,600 Iraqis currently detained illegally by the Multi-national Forces in Iraq who likewise await the release of their loved ones. These detainees are being held without formal charges, without access to their families and legal advisors, and without recourse to a fair and open judicial process.
There is nothing more maddening to me than to hear the diatribe of leftist appeasers flailing about a cesspool of moral equivalency. What I want to know is where were the CPT when hundreds of thousands of Iraqis were being murdered, maimed and detained by the tyrant the US ousted from Iraq? I want to know why CPT isn't in Sudan standing between the Islamist murderers and Christian villagers. I want to know why CPT isn't surrounding suppressed Iranians as the mullahs sentence them to routine stonings and hangings.

You can bet that if and when the US or Israel has to strike against Iran (and brace yourselves folks, that is very likely to happen) that the CPT will be bravely protesting Israel and the US and siding with the murdering mullahs. You can bet also that if the US took down the raiders of Sudan that the CPT would be there in force protesting the deaths of murdering raiders and the regrettable innocent casualties.

The problem I have with the CPT is that they do not recognize that murdering regimes will continue to kill either forever or until they are stopped. While the CPT is wringing its hands in nervous guilt we are still in the battle of freeing a people and getting them on their feet.

I do wish for the safe return of the CPT members. In freedom this time, however, I hope they opt not be the propogandizing mouthpieces of fascist murderers.

Iran

In the same few days that Iran has demanded the US provide a timeline to remove its troops out of Iraq, Iran is being accused by the US of providing bombs to terrorist operatives that are helping to keep the insurgency alive.

From ABC News:

U.S. military and intelligence officials tell ABC News that they have caught shipments of deadly new bombs at the Iran-Iraq border.

They are a very nasty piece of business, capable of penetrating U.S. troops' strongest armor.

What the United States says links them to Iran are tell-tale manufacturing signatures — certain types of machine-shop welds and material indicating they are built by the same bomb factory.

"The signature is the same because they are exactly the same in production," says explosives expert Kevin Barry. "So it's the same make and model."

U.S. officials say roadside bomb attacks against American forces in Iraq have become much more deadly as more and more of the Iran-designed and Iran-produced bombs have been smuggled in from the country since last October.

"I think the evidence is strong that the Iranian government is making these IEDs, and the Iranian government is sending them across the border and they are killing U.S. troops once they get there," says Richard Clarke, former White House counterterrorism chief and an ABC News consultant. "I think it's very hard to escape the conclusion that, in all probability, the Iranian government is knowingly killing U.S. troops."
America needs to come to grips with how evil Iran actually is and what the remedy for evil is. These are not people that we can appease, nor are they people who will reasonably negotiate in good faith.

Everyone has to learn that you must pick your battles. There are times when compromise is the best option and there are times when you can afford to give your opponents what they want. However, there are times too when we must get what we want without loss or compromise. This is one of those times. Radical Islam will not retreat nor will it accept to sit at rest. By definition, Islam must attempt to rule the world, and politicos in Iran have said as much.

You can pay me now or pay me later goes the old saying. As expensive as the cost will be today, it will be exponentially higher in the future.

Jihad In North Carolina

Mohammed Reza Taheri-azar would like to teach the world about Allah and his will. He plans to do this by representing himself in court.

Judge Patricia Devine asked if he had any questions at this morning's arraignment.

"I actually don't have any questions," said Taheri-azar, clad in a long-sleeve orange jumpsuit and leg shackles. "I am thankful you are going to hear this trial to learn more about the will of Allah, the creator."
I believe that there isn't much more to learn about Islam than what I could find written plainly on the nose of a speeding SUV as it heads toward a crowd of pedestrians. But, thats just me.

Jack Murtha Doesn't Disappoint on Face The Nation

John Hinderaker at PowerLine takes Jack Murtha out behind the woodshed for a good old fashioned whipping after Murtha's despicable performance on Face The Nation yesterday.

Every time Murtha opened his mouth a falsehood fell out, and for the stupid way it made him look on national television, Murtha would have been much better off if he had been dropping teeth out of his pie hole instead.

It's rather remarkable that a sitting United States Congressman would play so fast and loose with the facts, especially in the context of accusing the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of being a liar. Pretty much every "fact" that Murtha hysterically tossed out is wrong.

Murtha's suggestion that the administration said Iraq had nuclear weapons is absurd. (Why don't talk show hosts ever seem to call Democrats on these wild misrepresentations?) Likewise his claim that there is "no al Qaeda connection." In light of everything we now know, that statement can only be described as ignorant. And, even if we charitably assume that Murtha is behind the curve on this one, how about Zarqawi? How about Ansar al-Islam? How about the terrorist training camps? How about the many connections beween (sic) Saddam's Iraq and al Qaeda that are documented in the Senate Intelligence Committee's report?

Murtha says he can tell we aren't making any progress in Iraq because one of this staffers reads the State Department's Weekly Status Report, which shows that "we've made no progress at all." Maybe Murtha needs some new staffers. Whoever has been describing the State Department's Weekly Status Reports to him forgot to mention a few things.
Murtha seems to be sliding closer and closer to either that chasm of daftism or that of blatant liar. As chasms go, I think we would all like to be lucky enough to stay away from the daft one while maintaining the fortitude and integrity to steer away from the one of deceit. As we look closer at these pits I wonder if, in Jack Murtha's case, they aren't the same thing.

Brave George Clooney

So, did anyone watch the Oscars? I'm afraid that for the 23rd year in a row I missed the proceedings, the glitter, the excitement, the pateantry and the self-absorption.

With the possible exception of Congress, never does a gathering collect in one place as much attitude and pride as does the Academy Awards. These are, after all, the beautiful people. And if you ask them they will tell you they are smart, witty, charming and brave as well.

The Weekly Diatribe takes note of the acceptance speech of one of the most beautiful people of all.

We are a little bit out of touch in Hollywood every once in a while… but maybe that’s a good thing. We were the ones who talked about AIDS when it was being whispered. We talked about civil rights when it wasn’t really popular. This Academy gave Hattie McDaniel an Oscar in 1939 when blacks were still sitting in the backs of theaters. I’m proud to be part of this Academy. I’m proud to be part of this community. I’m proud to be out of touch.” – George Clooney, accepting his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor Sunday evening
Clooney’s comments were as interesting for what he didn’t point out about the Hollywood culture as what he did. Take Hattie McDaniel, for example. It is true that, in 1939, blacks were still sitting in the backs of movie theatres – that was still true in much of America when I was a kid in the early 1960s.

Here’s what Clooney left out: while filming “Gone With the Wind”, Ms. McDaniel was forced to don makeup and costume and sleep in segregated quarters. She was treated poorly by other actors and crew working on the film. After winning her Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, Ms. McDaniel was relegated to supporting roles for the rest of her long career. Nor did Clooney mention the fact that parts for black actors and actresses in Hollywood films were extremely limited well into the 1950s, a fact that the NAACP protested on a regular basis.

Those wonderful, “out of touch” Hollywood people, in other words, weren’t really so progressive and ahead of the rest of the country after all, a point that can be reinforced by pointing out the fact that the first African American woman to win an Oscar for Best Actress was Halle Berry just a few years ago. This award took place almost 60 years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball, a half century after the landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision forced the integration of the nation’s public schools, forty-five years after Rosa Parks refused to take a seat at the back of the bus, and forty years after the enactment of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

As for blacks being forced to sit in the back of theatres, well, happily that practice came to an eventual end, but the Hollywood culture had precious little to do with it. Had they so desired, in fact, major film distributors could have used their market positions to essentially force theatre operators to fully integrate their facilities or face higher rental fees or refusal of service altogether. But no such efforts were made.
The entire article is excellent. Thanks toRight Nation.

Solomon Amendment Upheld

In a huge 8-0 decision by the US Supreme Court with the decision written by Chief Justice John Roberts, universities that accept federal aid money must allow military recruiters on their campuses.

From FoxNews with a hat tip to Right Nation.

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously Monday that colleges that accept federal money must allow military recruiters on campus, despite university objections to the Pentagon's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays.

Justices rejected a free-speech challenge from law school professors who claimed they should not be forced to associate with military recruiters or promote their campus appearances.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the decision, which was unanimous.

Law schools had become the latest battleground over the "don't ask, don't tell" policy allowing gay men and women to serve in the military only if they keep their sexual orientation to themselves.
While the "don't ask, don't tell" policy is the legal focus of this battle, don't kid yourself that many of the university elites are looking for any excuse to inhibit the military.
College leaders have said they could not afford to lose federal help, some $35 billion a year.
We shall see who wins out in this internal tug of war between the academics pandering for the money and those leftists grouching over everything military.

Actually, I think it would be great if the recruiters could go on campus and we didn't give the leftists a dime.

Iran Negotiator Brags About Lies In Talks with EU3

How does the saying go? Fool me once and shame on you. Fool me twice and shame on me.

Without a doubt, this is a lesson long learned by the United States in its dealings with the Iranians. Europe seems to be a little behind on the learning curve.

As reported in the Telegraph today, with a hat tip to The Religion of Peace.

The man who for two years led Iran's nuclear negotiations has laid out in unprecedented detail how the regime took advantage of talks with Britain, France and Germany to forge ahead with its secret atomic programme.

In a speech to a closed meeting of leading Islamic clerics and academics, Hassan Rowhani, who headed talks with the so-called EU3 until last year, revealed how Teheran played for time and tried to dupe the West after its secret nuclear programme was uncovered by the Iranian opposition in 2002.

Iran has completed uranium enrichment equipment at Isfahan
He boasted that while talks were taking place in Teheran, Iran was able to complete the installation of equipment for conversion of yellowcake - a key stage in the nuclear fuel process - at its Isfahan plant but at the same time convince European diplomats that nothing was afoot.

"From the outset, the Americans kept telling the Europeans, 'The Iranians are lying and deceiving you and they have not told you everything.' The Europeans used to respond, 'We trust them'," he said.
The EU3 shouldn't feel alone in their stupidity as I'm sure Jimmy Carter would have gone along too.

A Reflection on Home Security

I try to look at the logic of it all. I try to understand the reasoning that could be driving this activity, the will of the criminal, the thoughts behind the act, the gall necessary to perpetrate the evil.

We surround ourselves with walls of wood and stone not just in an attempt to harness the warmth and love that only a family can provide, but also to provide us with safety and security from the elements of ill designed behavior.

Our homes are not fortresses, for if they were they would provide only the latter and not the former. But, they are not public parks either, open to whoever feels like sauntering inside or passing through. We expect and deserve our privacy, our safety, and the warmer comforts of life inside the protected places we call our homes.

So, it really pisses me off when a mouse decides to take a dump inside my silverware drawer. It ain't like I keep food in there.

Taliban Comes to Yale

If you would like to read a disgusting example of how far leftward and anti-military the elite academic establishment has become, read this article about what is going on at Yale these days. Jim Kouri writes in the New Media Alliance.

While most American parents can only dream of sending their kids to a first-tier university such as Harvard and Yale, a former ambassador for the oppressive and brutal Afghan Taliban is enrolled at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, even though he possesses none of the qualifications to attend such an institution for higher education.

"Yale University enrolls the Taliban's former spokesman as a student, but continues to prohibit other students from organizing a Reserve Officer Training Corps chapter on campus and also seeks to deny students the right to hear from military recruiters about employment opportunities," say members of the student group Young America's Foundation.

Bigoted Professional Tennis

Debbie Schlussel has made me aware of something that comes as a complete surprise.

The surprise is not that Qatar and Dubai are filled with vicious Jew-haters. That sort of thing goes with the Mid-East territory. What does surprise me is that the World Tennis Association and the Association of Tennis Professionals openly advocate the bigotry.

Read Debbie Schlussel.

Not sure why they call these the Dubai and Qatar Opens. Both are very clearly CLOSED.
Ain't that the truth.

BBC Conducts Exclusive Interview With Very Credible Detainee At Guantanimo

The BBC is reporting that it has conducted an exclusive interview with a Kuwaiti detainee at Guantanamo through his lawyer.

[a] Kuwaiti man being held at Guantanamo Bay gave a rare interview to the BBC in which he described the force-feeding of hunger strikers at the camp, something which he says amounts to torture.

Answering the questions from the BBC's Today Programme through his lawyer, Fawzi al-Odah said hunger strikers were strapped to a chair and force-fed through a tube three times a day.

"First they took my comfort items away from me. You know, my blanket, my towel, my long pants, then my shoes. I was put in isolation for 10 days.

"They came in and read out an order. It said if you refuse to eat, we will put you on the chair [for force feeding]."

Mr Odah, who has been held at the base since 2002, was one of 84 inmates at Guantanamo who went on hunger strike in December. Just four are still refusing food.

He told how detainees were given "formulas" to force them to empty their bowels and were strapped to a metal chair three times a day, where a tube was inserted to administer food.

"One guy, a Saudi, told me that he had once been tortured in Saudi Arabia and that this metal chair treatment was worse than any torture he had ever endured or could imagine," Mr Odah said.

The UN Human Rights Commission said recently that it regarded force-feeding at Guantanamo as a form of torture, a charge the US firmly has repeatedly denied.
Wow, this force feeding has to be bad stuff. They must be making them eat asparagus or something.

Ginsberg Takes A Nap

During oral arguments on the Texas redistricting case March 1, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg conked out.

As you can guess, it was completely ignored by the broadcast networks.

With an assist to PowerLineBlog, Newsbusters has the story and at least one observation.

Not one of the three broadcast evening news programs sought fit to mention Ginsburg's (sic) nap, although both NBC Nightly News and the CBS Evening News covered the hearing.

But pretend for a moment that this had happened to a conservative member of the Supreme Court. Let's say Thomas, Alito or Roberts took an unscheduled rest during a hearing. Think that would have been a story? After all, Clarence Thomas is criticized for not talking enough and Scalia is attacked for tennis related issues.
I have some real issues with George W. Bush on several distinct areas of his Presidency. However, I'd sure like to have him get a shot at nominating a replacement for Ginsberg -- even though a sleeping liberal is quite a bit less dangerous than one that is wide awake.

May We Push The Envelope Please...

Ok, I have to be honest. I've never been that thrilled by the Oscars. I remember watching part of one of the ceremonies back in the early 80s, but that had more to do with a girl I was trying to get friendly with than it had anything to do with the movie industry.

But even I, as insulated as I am from all things Hollywood, have taken some interest in the nominations of this year's academy. I will not sit in front of the television in bejeweled boxers holding my breath each time an envelope is opened. I will read with some interest, however, who won what, perhaps even as soon as the next day. Not because I passionately believe that certain movies are more deserving than others, but because I am astounded at how liberally biased and anti-American the movie industry has become, and how, despite the crashing numbers for these politically expedient films, it continues to push its consumer-losing bias.

Read Charles Krauthammer today in Townhall. He takes one such nominated movie, Syrianna, and analyzes its import to geopolitics.

The political hero is the Arab prince who wants to end corruption, inequality and oppression in his country. As he tells his tribal elders, he intends to modernize his country by bringing the rule of law, market efficiency, women's rights and democracy.

What do you think happens to him? He, his beautiful wife and beautiful children are murdered, incinerated, by a remote-controlled missile, fired from CIA headquarters in Langley, no less -- at the very moment that (this passes for subtle cross-cutting film editing) his evil younger brother, the corrupt rival to the throne and puppet of the oil company, is being hailed at a suitably garish ``oilman of the year'' celebration populated by fat and ugly Americans.
Of course, Syrianna is just one of many movies nominated this year where the plot and characters lean decidedly toward leftist viewpoints. You want examples? How about this stable of Best Picture nominees; Brokeback Mountain (gay sheepmen,) Capote (gay protagonist,) Crash (all of America is racist,) Munich (historic revisionism and moral relativism,) and Good Night, And Good Luck, (Hollywood's very personal rebuttal to Joseph McCarthy which includes heaping doses of historic revisionism and out-of-context facts.)

How do I know about this? Hah! I can read.

It is getting more and more obvious each year that The Academy is every bit as interested in pushing a few envelopes onto society as they are at opening a few self-serving ones for their nominees. It is all just a huge leftist plot to keep me at home in boxers -- that and $3.50 for a poorly mixed fountain drink.
